HYPER LEXICON

Welcome
to the electronic version of Hyper Lexicon by Stafilidis Publications.
Presentation of Stafilidis

Hyper
Lexicon starts automatically when you place the program’s cd in one of your
computer’s cd-rom devices. In case Hyper Lexicon doesn’t start automatically on
your computer, you can do the following:
Place
the program’s cd in one of your computer’s cd-rom device and double-click on
“My Computer” icon. In the window that shows up double-click on the icon
labeled “Hyper Lexicon” and the program starts. If it doesn’t start again, but
instead a list of the contents of the cd shows up, you can double-click on the
icon labeled “HyperLex” or “HyperLex.exe” and the program’s environment will be
displayed on your screen.
To
search for an entry you only have to type it in the entry search frame. While you are typing, all
the entries starting with the word or part of the word you have typed in the
entry search frame are
displayed in the results list (automatic word
completion feature).
Moving
up and down the list using the mouse or keyboard (Up arrow, Down arrow, Page Up
and Page Down keys) and selecting the proper entry (by clicking the mouse
button on it if this is required), the following information is being displayed
for the selected entry:
Entry searches in Hyper Lexicon can be
performed using various criteria. The simplest way to search for an entry is to
type the entry in the entry search frame.
Other criteria that can be used to perform a search are:
Fast
Translation Feature
One of the conveniences offered by Hyper
Lexicon is the fast translation feature. This feature enables the connection of
Hyper Lexicon with the other applications running on your computer and provides
the capability to search into Hyper Lexicon for the translation of words found in
other applications, using less steps than those required for the normal
operation of Hyper Lexicon. This feature is enabled using the Fast Translation Activation button.
This application consists of the following
elements:

In the entry search frame you can type
the entry you wish to search for, or its starting letters. All the entries
starting with the word typed are displayed in the results list.
The first letter of the word typed in
this frame defines the dictionary used for the search, English Greek or Greek
English.
This is the area where all the entries that satisfy the search criteria are
displayed. You can move through the entries of this list using the mouse or
the keyboard (up arrow, down arrow, page up and page down keys). Every entry currently selected is displayed in the selected entry area for a more clear view and
its translation is displayed in the translation
frame.
In case
you have narrowed the window enough to make the translation frame not visible,
the translation for each entry is displayed in a new frame of smaller size
which pops up.
Every time an entry is selected in the
results list, the entry is displayed in this area for a more clear view of it.
The main reason for this is that some entries are too wide to fit in the results list and be displayed
properly.
If an entry is selected in the results list then the translation
of this entry is displayed in this frame.
If you double-click a word displayed in this frame you can
look up the translation of that word in Hyper Lexicon.
Hyper Lexicon has the capability to run
on your desktop occupying the least possible space on it, so that you can have
more space available for the other applications you’re using simultaneously.
Hyper Lexicon’s window can become
narrow enough to allow only the entry search
frame and the results list
be visible on the screen. In this mode the translation of each entry is
presented in a new frame that pops up in front of the results list, as shown in
the following screen capture. The only limitation that this mode imposes is
that the entries in the results list can only be selected using the mouse and
not the keyboard.

![]()
The flag displayed on this button
indicates the current dictionary, which can be English Greek or Greek English. For
every new search the current dictionary can change depending on the first
letter of the word typed in the entry search
frame, and the flag on the button changes accordingly.
Before you start typing a new word, by
pressing this button you can change the current keyboard layout from Greek to
English and vice versa. The new layout can be observed on most computers by an
indication at the bottom right corner of the screen, very close to the time
indication.
![]()
With the Previous entry button you can
display again the entry selected right before the current one. Subsequent uses
of this button enable you to go through the latest entries you have looked up,
in reverse order.
Every time an entry is selected in the
results list, this entry is being added to the list of previous entries. To
look for a previous entry, instead of moving backwards one by one, you can
select it directly from the list that is displayed when pressing this button.
![]()
When you move backwards through the
previous entries using the previous
entry button, using the next entry button you can move forward through
those entries again. Briefly, this is the reverse process of previous entry button.
With the list of next entries button a
list is displayed that includes all the previous entries you have traversed
backwards with the previous
entry button. You can move to any one of these entries by selecting it from
the list.
![]()
Hyper Lexicon’s Copy button copies the
selected entry in the results list
or the text in the translation frame to the
Windows clipboard. The copied text can then be pasted into the entry search
frame using Hyper Lexicon’s Paste button, or to any other application running
on your computer (e.g. a word processor or an editor) using the Paste function of that application.
If during the copy the cursor is in the
translation frame then the text in the translation frame is copied (all or the
selected part of it if there is). Otherwise, if there is an entry selected in
the results list, this entry is copied to the clipboard.
Using Hyper Lexicon’s Paste button you can paste in the entry search frame text that has been
selected from another application as well.
Note
In case you paste greek text from Hyper
Lexicon to another application and the text does not appear in proper greek,
try copying the text again to the clipboard having selected greek keyboard
layout (as indicated at the bottom right corner of your screen). The copied
text will now be pasted in proper greek in the other application.

This button prints the current entry,
which is the entry that is being highlighted in the results list. First, the printer
selection window is displayed on the screen, which includes a few settings you
can change before printing, and by pressing Ok the entry and its translation is
printed out on paper.
![]()
This button displays the following
window, which enables you to perform composite searches for entries.

You can search for entries that start
with, contain or end with a specific word or letter sequence. You can also
search for entries that belong to a specific category. Finally, you can make a
combination of all or some of these criteria for even more limited results.
·
If you type “para” in
the first frame of the window and press Ok the search results include all the entries
that start with this letter sequence, like parabolic, parachute etc.
·
If you type “metic” in the third
frame the search
results include all the entries ending in “metic”, like arithmetic,
cosmetic etc.
·
If you type “water” in the second
frame the search results include all the entries that contain “water”, like backwater,
low-water mark, water etc.
·
If you type “para” in the first frame and “is” in the third
frame you get all the entries that start with “para” and end with “is”, like
paralysis, parataxis, etc.
·
If you select “βιολογία, βιολογικός” (which means biology,
biological) from the
categories list the search returns all the entries that belong in the specified
category, like parasitology, polytene, vacuole etc.
·
If you select “βιολογία, βιολογικός” from the categories list and type “para” in the first frame
then you can get all the entries that belong to the specified category and
start with “para”, like parablast, parasitology, etc.
![]()
This button performs a search of a
specific word in Hyper Lexicon’s translations. You type a word in the frame and
press Ok to perform the search.

This process can be time consuming. Depending on your
hardware it may take a few minutes to complete.
![]()
This function enables the connection of
Hyper Lexicon with other applications running on your computer and offers you
the ability to search in Hyper Lexicon for words that belong to other
applications, providing the convenience to make fewer steps for the searches
than those normally required for Hyper Lexicon’s operation.
Let’s
examine the case where you want to look up the translation of a large number of
English words found in a document. You have opened this document with a word
processor and wish to look up all the words, one by one. The normal procedure
for each word is the following:
·
switch to the word
processor
·
highlight a word
·
copy the word to the
clipboard
·
switch to Hyper
Lexicon
·
paste the word to the entry search frame. The entry’s translation
is displayed.
You have to perform the same steps for
each word.
Let’s examine
now what Fast Translation has to offer. To activate it you have to press the
activation button:
![]()
Hyper
Lexicon’s window title changes to “Hyper Lexicon – Γρήγορη Μετάφραση” and the button’s
icon becomes:
![]()
Now, the above
search is performed as follows:
·
switch to the word
processor. Hyper Lexicon is automatically
minimized and appears only at Windows taskbar
·
highlight a word
·
Copy the word to the clipboard. Hyper Lexicon is automatically restored on you desktop and the word you copied to the clipboard has already been transferred to the entry search frame. If the entry is found in Hyper Lexicon, then the translation is displayed in the corresponding frame.
You
perform the same steps for each word.
It is obvious that the benefits of using
the fast translation feature increase with the number of entries from some
document that you wish to look up in Hyper Lexicon. The use of this feature is
recommended when you are involved in reading or writing a book, spreadsheet,
web page or any other kind of document.
To deactivate fast translation feature
and return Hyper Lexicon to normal operation you must press the fast
translation deactivation button

Hyper Lexicon provides the
capability to insert your own entries, as well as add your own text to the
description of the existing entries.
This button displays the following menu, through the
selections of which you can edit the entries of the dictionary.

Hyper Lexicon provides the capability to insert your own
entries and add text to the description of existing entries. With this menu
option you can search for all the entries that you have created or edited and
display only these in the
results list. The entries that you have created
are displayed with an asterisk (*) at the end of the entry.
Hyper Lexicon provides the
capability to create new entries. The new entries are
merged with the existing entries in the dictionary and are included in the
results of any search having as an indication an asterisk (*) at the end of the
entry.
With this menu option the Insert New Entry window is displayed:

For each new entry, the information that must be inserted
is: entry, category and description. Finally, by
pressing the button Εισαγωγή the entry is inserted in
the dictionary, whereas the Ακύρωση button cancels the
process and you return to the main window of the dictionary.
With this menu option the Modify Entry window is displayed:

Modification is allowed for all entries in the
dictionary..
For the existing entries the only modification allowed is
the addition of text at the description of the entries.
When displaying the description of an edited entry, the added
text is displayed at the end of the description with the indication "Συμπλήρωση δική σας".
For the entries that are created by a user, all information can be modified.
The deletion of an entry is only allowed for entries that are created by a user. These entries are displayed with an asterisk (*) in the results list. For all the other entries this menu option is inactive.
In order to delete an entry, first you have to perform a
search so that the entry is displayed in the results list. Then you can select
it and delete it. Please be careful when deleting entries because after deletion
there is no way that an entry can be recovered.

This button displays a list of the main
abbreviations with their descriptions which are used in the translations of the
entries in Hyper Lexicon.

The pin button enables the stay-on-top
feature of Hyper Lexicon, which means that Hyper Lexicon is displayed
hierarchically on top of
all other windows on your desktop and is always visible.
You can easily narrow the width of
Hyper Lexicon’s window so that only the entry
search frame and the results
list are visible and enable the stay-on-top capability. By placing the
window at a side of the screen you can have the application visible all the
time occupying the least possible space on the screen.

Selecting this label the Stafilidis Publications
Presentation window is displayed on the screen.
![]()
Selecting this label a window appears
on the screen that contains Hyper Lexicon’s copyright information, as well as
contact information with Stafilidis Publications.

The
presentation window of Stafilidis Publications contains information concerning
other titles from
Stafilidis
Publications. Navigation through the titles is possible
selecting the titles in the list on the left side of the window using the mouse.
For each title selected a descriptive text is presented along with a picture on
the right side of the window.
Two other functions that can be
performed through this window is the installation
of Hyper Lexicon in the hard disk and the uninstalling from the hard disk. Both
functions can be performed from the icon placed at the bottom left corner of
the window. If Hyper Lexicon runs from the cd then this icon performs the
installation process, as shown in the indication next to the icon. If, on the
other side, Hyper Lexicon is already installed in the hard disk and runs from
there, then this icon performs the removal from the hard disk process.
Hyper Lexicon provides the capability to be installed in your computer’s hard disk and run from there. One reason to do so is speed, as the hard disk normally
works much faster than the cd-rom device.
The installation process is activated
from the presentation window, and
more specifically from the icon placed at the bottom left side of the window with
the indication “Εγκατάσταση στον σκληρό δίσκο”
(Install in the hard disk).
By clicking on the icon a window appears which expects you to specify the
folder in which the application will be installed. You can specify a new folder
or simply accept the folder suggested by the system. Press Ok to start the
installation process, during which Hyper Lexicon’s files are copied from the cd
to the hard disk and a shortcut is created on the desktop. From now on you can
run Hyper Lexicon from that shortcut.
Note
In some cases, while Hyper Lexicon is getting started from the hard disk, a message is displayed on the screen mentioning the program's cd. What you have to do is insert Hyper Lexicon's cd in your computer's cd-rom drive and Hyper Lexicon will work normally again.
Since Hyper Lexicon is installed on
your computer, there is the option of removing it from your hard disk.
The process of uninstalling Hyper
Lexicon can be
activated from the presentation
window, from the icon at the bottom left corner of the window, with the
indication “Απεγκατάσταση από τον σκληρό δίσκο”
(Uninstall from the hard disk).
Clicking on the icon displays a window which asks for confirmation to start the
process. Press Ναι
(Yes)
to remove Hyper Lexicon from your hard disk
and the shortcut from your desktop.
